FAQs

Why is regular chimney sweeping important?

Here are just some of the many reasons:

  • Safety. Sweeping stops the build-up of tar, creosote, and soot, significantly reducing the dangers of a chimney fire. It can also remove obstructions, such as bird nests and building debris.

  • Maintenance. Acidic deposits of soot and creosote, especially when subjected to damp conditions, can eat away at your flue or liner. Regular sweeping significantly reduces these corrosions and increases your chimney’s lifespan.

  • Health. Carbon monoxide is a by-product of combustion among other smoke particles. With an unswept chimney, you increase the likelihood and/or amount of pollutants entering your home.

  • Improve heating efficiency. A clean chimney allows smoke and gases to escape efficiently, improving the draw of your fire or stove. This means your heating appliance burns fuel more effectively, saving money and providing better warmth.

  • Ensure Compliance. If you rent out your property or use your fireplace commercially, local regulations may require regular chimney inspections and sweeps. Some building insurance companies require a chimney sweep certificate (Check the small print).

  • Prolong Chimney Lifespan. Regular maintenance reduces corrosive buildup and wear on your chimney’s lining, helping to extend its lifespan and prevent costly repairs

How often should get my chimney swept?

The frequency of chimney sweeping depends on the type of fuel being burned and how often the fireplace, stove, or chimney is used. Here are the HETAS-approved guidelines:

  • Wood-burning Appliance. Twice a year or Once per season.

  • Smokeless Fuels*. Once a year.

  • Bituminous Coal. Twice a year

At Caledonian Sweeps we are often asked if you use your wood-burning stove for winter only is it possible to have it swept once? We would recommend a single sweep a year in this case, depending on how heavily it is used. However, you will always run the risk if not keeping to the guidelines.

*Smokeless Fuels include Coal, anthracite, Charcoal, gas, and many others. Please see the link to the government website for approved fuels.

When should I get my chimney swept?

The best time to have your chimney swept is in the spring to summer after the burning season has ended. This ensures your chimney is clean and ready for use when you begin burning again. It can also save you:

  • Money. Sweeps often charge less for quieter times.

  • Time. Waiting times often decrease.

  • Problems. You can identify issues early on so you are not required to have your stove out of action for the cold months,

  • Repairs. When burning you create acidic soot deposits. These deposits can eat away at your flue and degrade the flue itself or the liners within, over time this will decrease the life of your flue. Cleaning your chimney after the burning season will help prolong your chimney’s health.

Do I need to prepare my home before the appointment?

To ensure a smooth and efficient chimney sweeping process, it’s important to provide a clear workspace in front of your fireplace.

Please ensure the area around your fireplace is free of any obstructions. Hot ash should be removed the evening before the appointment, and any ash or debris in the grate should also be cleared. To prevent accidental damage, we kindly ask that you remove any fragile items, ornaments, or decorations near the fireplace, as well as move any hearth furniture or companion sets.

Additionally, we’ll require access to a free plug socket for our vacuum cleaner. Your preparation helps us complete the job safely and efficiently.

How long does a chimney sweep take?

A ‘Standard Sweep’ should take no longer than an hour however it is not uncommon for it to take longer if you have a particularly restrictive or difficult flue to access.
